RE: Gillig Chassis ?

I've heard they were a very good chassis in their day. Question is if they were that good why aren't they still around? They definitely are still around just not in our world - they got out of the RV chassis business but still have strong support for anything they produced in the past. Gillig

RE: what do you mean I can't lift the wheels off the ground

Well, I can tell you why I don't (anymore :o ) - the parking brakes are on the rear wheels - while our jacks WILL lift the rig off the ground, doing so can allow the unit to move. This is embarrassing to admit but when it moves bad things happen - I raised the rear on a very slight slope and rig moved forward ( fortunately it did go forward and the jacks just kicked up ) and dropped - loud noise - scared the poo out of me and sheared right rear shock mount bolt. Now, if I have to get that high to get level I move or figure somehting else out. That is a neat picture of the pumper truck - did you notice the curve in the I beam supporting the truck - lot of weight there!!

RE: Noisy When Raining

Rubber over fiberglass is, basically, what the Bus Kote gives you plus the thermal isolation of the ceramic beads - my total $ was ~$250 + labor ( and I'm cheap according to DW ). I just went to a web site that sells Bus Kote and it may be what I'm looking for. Thanks for the tip. FYI - I figure the surface of my MH is about 316 sq ' (39 x 8). Did you use the two coats it recommends or just one? One coat of primer, two coats of Bus Kote and two coats of sealer - my area is about the same as yours.

RE: 30 amp extension cord. Where can I get one cheap?

Ebay Just remember - the longer the run the larger the gauge wire required.

RE: Noisy When Raining

I used Bus Kote to reduce the heat load in the coach - had the added advantage of greatly reducing the noise level also. Take care and enjoy!

RE: 1990 Beaver Marquis Inspection

Here is what I found on ours - Beaver used a foam ( sort of like a AC filter material ) like sealer around the windows. This looked to be adhesive backed and over time became a sticky gooey mess that no longer sealed the windows. I have taken all, but the windshield, windows out and cleaned this stuff up, resealed with gray caulking tape. Initially we had a couple of small leaks that would show up on a hard rain - this fixed that and really made a difference in the feel and sound level around the windows. This is not a real difficult job just tedious and time consuming but well worth the effort. Knowing this, my suggestion would be to look real close around the windows for any evidence that a leak has been long term and untreated. You will probably see some staining from moisture ( condensate from the glass ) but any softness or mold would be a flag to me. The other spots are around the toilet - look for softness of the sub-floor - our toilet was loose and the seal was leaking a little - was not a big problem but if not taken care of could become a major issue. Also around the skylight in the shower - a leak here might be the cause of what Steve saw in the '89's he looked at. I know there is the issue of the 3208 but I have seen that engine in boats for years and they have always seemed to give excellent and reliable service - I figure the thing will out last me :) . I like the fact that it is a purely mechanical engine/transmission ( no computers ) so there is a chance I can work on them - this is just a personal thing. Bottom line is if the unit has had even average care and service I would not be afraid of it - above average care is a plus. The quality and care of the original manufacture seems to have given us an excellent coach even 20 plus years later. When you crawl under it you will see the Gillig chassis is built like a tank - massive! The body of the coach is setting on a 1/4" rubber pad between the frame and the floor and the water tank is enclosed and heated by a tap off the heater ducting ( cold weather feature ). Good luck and if I have anything you need or can help, should you purchase, let me know. Take care - Buck

RE: Brakes are locked

The final report! The serviceman came today and got the brake free, it was just the left one. Took him about 10 minutes of prying and banging with a very big hammer. He told me that it was common to have air brakes rust to the point of not releasing. Very common after driving in a lot of rain and water. He said that the chisel thing was good because it did little damage to the linings. Overall the linings in class A systems are quit large with many inches of surface area. That's one of the reasons they get stuck. So much surface area to rust together. What I have learned, Move the coach the next day after a rain or at least cycle the emergency brake on and off. Thanks for all the advice. It was very useful and helpful. I think this strand has increased the knowledge of air brake systems. Thanks to all and have safe travels. JDA Thank you - many times we hear the problem but not often the end solution. I think my habit ( after a wet run ) will be to block the wheels and cycle the park brake from now on, as you and your mechanic suggest. Thanks again and safe/happy travels!

RE: need help on used class A

Very good info Ivy. So, if I can get it less than 25k what do you think? If you can get the Beaver for that range I would jump on it ( depending on it being in the shape you describe - look hard for water damage - that can really be a problem ). Take care and let me know if you get it - will help anyway I can. Then it would be PICTURES - let us see it!!!

RE: need help on used class A

Well, I would go for the Beaver ( note sig. below ) - in these times I've seen them in the $20 - @30K range. Totally different class than the gas models. Well designed and high quality - I have not found a single staple or piece of particle board - all solid wood.

RE: Brakes are locked

wsas talking about the spring undernieth the vehicals on the cable operated brakes, with air, its inside the rear,, your right, not the front the trailers we had didnt have springs in the brakes and you had to block them because they would bleed and want to roll away That's strange - the trailers I have dealt with have brakes applied with no air - is a "break away" safety feature - loss of air, springs ( inside the pots ) apply full break. Thought this was a Federal mandate. I had a spring break on one side and had occasion to open the pot - be VERY careful to clamp the thing tight and control the release - that spring is STRONG ( even when broken ) - I can see it could kill you if you were not careful.

RE: Brakes are locked

Tried it all! Hammer, rocking, stabbing brake pedal, you name it! No Joy! Going to try the chisel tomorrow. JDA Wow! You have tried it all - one thing more I would look at is are the brake actuators actually moving. On ours, if I lie down on the ground on the street side ( not under the coach! ) I can just see the curb side brake pot and slack adjuster. As others have said, make real sure the coach wheels are blocked and have someone release the park brake - you should see movement of the arm and adjuster ( as air is introduced into the pot and compresses the spring ). You might need a flash light - if there is no movement then I would think you have a failure somewhere else - chisel will not help. Also, if the other person fans ( pumps ) the pedal you should see a corresponding motion of the arms. Good luck!!!

RE: Brakes are locked

Have had that happen twice now - a small 2 lb hammer and a solid whack on the rear drums has been what it took for us. Both times it was after running in rain. Take care and keep us informed.

RE: 1988 Country Coach - thoughts?

Thanks for the info. It makes me feel a little more comfortable if I need to order parts down the road. From my research into "quality coaches" from the late 80's, there doesnt seem to be much around under $25k Only ones I tend to see are Country Coach, Vogue, Foretravel... All 3 excellent coaches - of course, I would add the Beaver ( 87 - 88 ) to that list - only issue is, I believe, you have stay with the "narrow" body units ( 96" max. ) don't you?
